Depraved is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a guide by Winnie Holzman. It’s based mostly on the 1995 novel Depraved: The Life and Instances of the Depraved Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a retelling of the 1939 movie The Wizard of Ouncesfrom the angle of the witches of Oz. The musical tells the story of Elphaba, the Depraved Witch of the West, and Galinda, the Good Witch of the North, their friendship and rivalry, and their eventual destinies.
Depraved premiered on Broadway in 2003 and has since been carried out in over 100 cities all over the world. It has gained quite a few awards, together with three Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Grammy Award. The musical has been praised for its catchy songs, its highly effective performances, and its intelligent retelling of the traditional Ouncesstory.
