Why was the term political machine used to describe corrupt political systems in the late 1800s?

This is because they hired an organized group of people to handle their political campaigns with the objective of securing their nomination through any means possible.  Some of the tactics they employed were unfair and sometimes used to gain influence of  the wealthy and powerful to push their propaganda.
