Within the classical conditioning model, acquisition and extinction can be thought of as opposites

Acquisition in classical conditioning:

Acquisition has to do with the beginning of learning when a person establishes response through a stimulus.

Extinction in classical conditioning:

Extinction has to do with that stage where the behavior that was learnt starts to decrease or gradually fade. This means that the conditioned response has become weakened.
