What does Poe mean when he says that he is the creator of the future

Poe is challenging the idea of life dictated by fate, instead saying that HE is the creator of his own future.
I assume this would be interchangeable with anyone, that every person is the creator of his future.

Poe could also be referring to the broader picture, that 'I' or mankind is the creator of the earth's future, that decisions made in this present life will not only affect, but shape the future.
