The key battle that finally turned the tide against the Confederates was the Siege of Vicksburg. Vicksburg was the last major stronghold of the Confederate Army located on the Mississippi River and capturing completed one of the strategic plans of the Union Army. With the Battle of Gettysburg finished the day before, they are both cited as turning points during the Civil War, when the Union Army advanced instead of the Confederate Army.
