How were the french settlements different from and similar to the Spanish settlements?

The main way in which the French settlements were different from the Spanish is that the French were mostly concerned with the fur trade, while the Spanish were more interesting in finding gold and silver. They were both similar in that they were created to enrich their respective empires.
